Phill Jupitus began his performing career in 1984 and I have seen him many times over the years mainly at the Edinburgh Fringe festival. Jupitus is more than a stand-up comedian and is never afraid to experiment. I have seen him appear in plays (Waiting For Alice, Coalition), sing his own songs (Loving Linda Smith Gala Concert, Barry Cryer’s 80th Birthday Roast), perform readings (Phill Jupitus Reads Dickens where he memorably had to ask the audience for aspirin to cure a hangover so he could start the show). He has also performed and devised improvisation (Phill Jupitus Quartet: Made Up, Comedy Store 30th Birthday show), nosltalgia (his tribute to classic children’s TV shows Chigley and Trumpton interviewing legend Brian Cant on stage), guest spots (Mervyn Stutter’s 20th Anniversary show) and deliver stand-up comedy (Phill Jupitus Stands Down, Roar With Laughter). Often on stage, Jupitus leaves from his microphone completely to speak directly to the audience. At times he bursts into childish giggles himself, proving himself only human, which only increases the roars of laughter from the crowd. Jupitus can be unpredictable, infectious ad dynamic and he stands out amongst other comedians in his unique approach to his work and the way he presents it. The extremely versatile comic is always interesting to watch because he is surprising and original.
Fringe stalwart, comedian and brilliant improviser Jupitus was a guest on Whose Line Is It Anyway? when I saw the show live at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2019. He particularly excelled at accents effortlessly playing whatever the audience wanted to see.
