Stephen K Amos can put his hand to almost anything and I have seen him perform many times over the years. I have seen him acting in plays such as the London run of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest starring Christian Slater in 2004 as well as Talk Radio in 2006 with Eric Bogosian and The School For Scandal with Lionel Blair in 2009. Amos has proved to be a very versatile actor. I have also seen him anchor his own chat show at the Edinburgh Festival in 2009 and 2014 where has been an amiable host. However, it is as a stand-up comedian that Amos really comes into his own. His unflagging ability to turn on the charm and tell endless jokes and funny stories ensure he is a sure-fire bet for an evening filled with amusement.
The titles of his shows say it all: The Feelgood Factor in 2009 and The Best Medicine in 2010. Amos style is sheer entertainment laced with lots of laughter. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching him every time I have seen him and one of his strengths was that Amos excelled at communicating with an audience. His easy riffing and gentle mocking always seemed to keep the crowd in their place and the gag-factor high. He entertained himself as much as the audience, laughing freely at the situations he created.
The comedian made an excellent compere at the Headliners Comedy 16th Birthday night that I saw in London in September 2018. He returned as an act for the 17th birthday at Headliners in September 2019. He was the master of audience participation effortlessly dealing with heckles and daft comments from the crowd picking apart the safest of replies. He also was thrown by my loud infectious laugh. His stories included his comedy career experiences at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as well as family and current affairs were very well written and extremely funny. I have been watching Amos for a while and his ability and endless feel-good charm to get a crowd on his side makes him a great comic talent.
I attended a new production of the classic Lerner & Lowe musical My Fair Lady at the London Coliseum in July 2022 as an early birthday treat. Directed by Bartlett Sher, the Lincoln Centre revival after 21 years featured Amos as Alfred P Doolittle, the father of Eliza Doolittle who is trained by Professor Higgins to be transformed from a Cockney Flower girl into a proper lady. The story is Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw, and the film and theatre production is My Fair Lady. One of the great musicals, Amos gave a fair stab at two classic songs from the memorable score: With A Little Bit of Luck and I’m Getting Married In The Morning.
K Amos was a guest for Headliners Comedy Club in London in February 2023. He was effortlessly good at chatting to the audience with an abundance of hilarious jokes and store that really entertained the crowd.
Amos is a class act, a very funny man and highly recommended.
