Alexander Bennett proved to be a very easy-going and entertaining guest compere when I saw him perform twice at Always Be Comedy in May 2019 and again in September 2019. He was appealing and had a talent for one-liners and funny stories involving the subtleties of both sexes which encouraged excellent audience banter that made the crowd endear to him.
Bennett was also compere for Dan vs Food that I saw at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2019. The show was created by Bennett and Dan Cardwell and the premise was that a man (Cardwell) eats a three-course meal on stage which was acted out as the greatest cultural event of the year. Bennett played host surrounded by a team of Fringe favourites (Nick Helm as a rival eater, Phil Wang and Ivo Graham as commentators, Sophie Dukor and Olga Koch as reviewers and so on) with Dan also encouraged by special guests including Iain Stirling, Glenn Moore and Ed Gamble. It was good to see all the comedians enjoying themselves and a good idea made for a bizarre show which had a cult following with a packed audience.
Bennett made a welcome appearance trying out new material in a ten-minute routine at the Live @ Limehouse 4 comedy showcase that I saw in January 2020.
In June 2021, compere James Gill celebrated his birthday online at Always Be Comedy Online. An amazing line up of surprise comedians including Bennett gave a no-holds-barred tribute ‘roast’ to the great man. The show was one of the funniest ninety-minutes of the year.
I watched Bennett’s new solo show, I Don’t Care for The Man Myself, at the Leicester Comedy Festival in February 2023. Billed as a show about hating yourself, and amongst other things, choosing not to, Bennett’s trademark style of friendly then annoyed delivery suited the show perfectly as he talked about things that got on his nerves. The stories were extremely clever and funny. Bennett also proved to be a great guest for Comedy Arcade Live at the Leicester Comedy Festival, and it was a joy to spend time in his company.
