I love comedians who tell puns. I reckon along with Tim Vine, Stewart Francis, Gary Delaney and Milton Jones, for me Darren Walsh is the best joke teller of puns in Britain at the present time. I first saw him headline a free comedy showcase Birdies Comedy in London in 2015 where he busied himself producing lots of well-worked out props for his puns.
I wanted to see him again so I went to the Brighton Fringe and watched his experimental performance for his first solo show Punderbolt cleverly titled Progworkress. Before the show, I met him at the bar and even bought his book Cheep Laughs: 1025 Really Daft Gags. He very kindly signed the book and also wrote an impromptu gag based on my name: I made a cuppa using Richard but afterwards felt gill tea. Not bad for an off the cuff pun. The try-out show worked and when I saw Punderbolt itself at the Museum of Comedy, it had been refined into a very funny laugh out loud comedy gig.
Walsh made a guest appearance again at the new venue for Birdies Comedy – The Savoy Tup pub in 2017. He was great again and I marvelled at the ingenious wordplay that made up the joke. The laughter rate again was very high.
Walsh returned to the Brighton Fringe with his show Massive Punt that I saw in May 2018. The themed show which was an airplane trip around the world was extremely well constructed and the jokes were told in succession at lightning speed to a very enthusiastic crowd.
I was late for the start of the Laughing Horse Pick of The Fringe showcase. When I arrived, Walsh was the first guest act on stage and had just started his routine. Initially I was a little disappointed because I had seen his full show a few hours previously but what was impressive and brilliant was that for the most part Walsh delivered a whole load of new jokes for this guest spot. It was a pleasure to see as delivered more inspired one liners from a very funny man.
I saw Walsh’s solo show Massive Punt again at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2019. So good to see twice, one of the most impressive things about this very funny man is that there are always new jokes in the show.
In August 2019, I went to see Walsh’s brand-new show Punimal Farm. Based around the theme of animals, the audience were subject to another hilarious hour of extremely funny puns. As I sat on the front row continuously laughing, Walsh decided that I should help with his visual props which I was delighted to do. The show was a very uplifting way to finish a busy Edinburgh Fringe week of watching shows.
Walsh made a very welcome visit to Birdies comedy showcase where he tried out newly written puns with noises and visuals when I went along in January 2020.
I was very impressed with his show Punimal Farm that I went to see it again at the Leicester Comedy Festival in February 2020.
During the worldwide pandemic and lockdown of 2020, I want to thank the comedian for posting online very funny puns and videos almost daily designed to cheer everybody up in those strange times. In August, I should have been watching Walsh’s new show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The Fringe was cancelled for the first time in its history. Nevertheless, in August, Walsh appeared and produced his best video yet Stand-up Covid. This is a very clever and extremely amusing five-minute of jokes and puns. I did get to see Walsh perform live again in at the Museum of Comedy in August 2021. Unfortunately, there were technical issues but the sign of a great comedian which Walsh is meant that he continued as best that he could and triumphed delivering one-line puns and prop jokes to an extremely enthusiastic audience. It was great to see him live on stage again.
The comedian performed a full hour of daft and extremely silly puns at the Leicester Comedy Festival in February 2022 and was a guest for Laughing Horse Clean Prick of The Fringe at the Brighton Fringe in May 2023.
Walsh always makes me continuously roar with laughter and he is an absolute joy to watch.
