Tom Allen is an extremely popular current star of British comedy. Apart from seeing comic Tom Allen live on stage in Edinburgh at the Big Comedy Gala for Macmillan Cancer Support in 2011 and for the 99 Comedy Club in 2017; since 2016 when I started to attend Always Be Comedy on a regular basis, Tom Allen has become a firm favourite with the audience.
Every time he performed, the charming comedian was chatty and likeable throughout his set and always got the audience on his side. He delivered routines with malicious arrogance and self-exaggerating humour. He was a very appealing storyteller and almost all his material was both unequivocally relevant and utterly hilarious. He always managed with ease to generate big continuous laughter and has become a very funny comedian.
The camp comic wearing his trademark smart suit made a surprise guest appearance at Always Be Comedy in November 2018. He brilliantly deconstructed an annoying hen night that he was forced to endurance with sarcasm, extreme innuendo and scathing wit.
He made a very welcome return to Always Be Comedy in September 2019 where he got chatting to a member of the audience who had seen him at her local supermarket. The dialogue between the two was hysterical and unique to the evening. His routines involving characters at a party was brilliantly delivered.
He appeared as a surprise guest again at Always Be Comedy in March 2020, as a last-minute mystery guest for Always Be Comedy Online in April 2020 and as a special guest for the first live show at the club for five months since lock down. His put-downs were so funny to watch and his self-depreciation and cutting remarks delighted the audience who, like me, were crying with laughter.
The comedian featured in An Evening with Tom Allen for Always Be Comedy Online in November 2020. The virtual front row was asked by the compere to wear suits and a bald wig in honour of and whilst watching the comedian. I wore a black shirt, blue tie and round hat to hide my hair. At the start of the evening, it was commented by James Gill that I looked like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle or a burglar which got laughs. When Allen was introduced, he commented that I looked like Benny from Crossroads which got a big laugh! Allen talked about his new book No Shame which focussed on his upbringing and comedy career. His stories were hysterical and he was a master storyteller on a par with Victoria Wood (who he revealed was his favourite comedian) and Peter Kay.
I watched an interview with Tom Allen for the Leicester Comedy Festival which took place online because of the Coronavirus epidemic in February 2021. Allen talked to founding director Geoff Rowe about his comedy career, his highlights and views on the future of live comedy.
Allen also topped the bill for his friend in a charity show organised by Always Be Comedy Online: Suzi Ruffell All Stars for Young Roots in March 2021 and appeared again live from his new house for Always Be Comedy Online: Kerry Godliman Allstars in April 2021.
Billed as a special mystery guest, Allen returned to Always Be Comedy live in May and July 2022. Effortlessly funny as ever chatting with the audience, dressed immaculately in a suit, and featuring material about relationships and holidays, he was incredibly funny and delighted the crowd with his inimitable comic style.
Allen’s unique take of sarcastic, cutting humour and rebellious camp wit has made him rightfully a great comedian and I look forward to seeing him on stage or online again soon.
