After seeing a very well-constructed and funny show performed live at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2006, between 2007 and 2011, I attended recordings of the satirical Radio series The Now Show written by and starring Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis featuring Laura Shavin, Emma Kennedy, Jon Holmes and many a guest comedian. Taking a mocking look at the week’s news events, the show also featured a musical turn every week from Mitch Benn. Week by week Benn made up comedy songs with pin-sharp lyrics based on what had happened in the world that week. Benn’s musical spot was extremely popular part of the show and so he decided to take the idea to the Edinburgh Fringe where he has been performing nearly every year.
I have not to date had chance to see his solo show at the Edinburgh Festival, but I did get to see him being interviewed by comedian Stephen K Amos at his Talk Show in 2014 where Benn again displayed his unique talent.
Benn was a guest for Monty Python’s Book Shambles at the Bristol Slapstick Festival in February 2023. Chaired by Robin Ince, Benn provided a valuable contribution to the discussion.
Benn was a guest for the new panel show 101 Rules for a Better World (By Comedians) in September 2025, where the comedian created a rule and the audience decide on whether to keep it or not. Benn had some inspired ideas and was a great addition to the show.
The musical comedian made a wonderful headline act for the Sofa So Funny! showcase that I watched in October 2024, and again in December 2025. Having not seen him for a while, and like a breath of fresh air, he treated the audience to a wonderful collection of satirical songs proving once again that he is one of the best comic songwriters on the circuit.
