Mervyn Stutter’s Pick of The Fringe: Pleasance Courtyard, Edinburgh, 2018
I have seen the great comedian John Maloney perform on stage for years. He was a regular compere many times at the legendary Comedy Store in London and I have also watched him at comedy Festivals as well. He is always dressed smartly in a black suit and tie and his delivery is wry and ironic. His deadpan, slow, deliberate and stark style plays beautifully with his stories of everyday mundane, frustrating life. For over twenty years, the reliably and acerbically humorous Maloney is an extremely funny comedian and compere.
Maloney was a guest at Mervyn Stutter’s Pick of The Fringe showcase that I saw at the Edinburgh Festival in August 2018. Having been a big fan of Maloney’s for years, I was delighted that he was appearing on the bill. He was promoting a show that he was performing with Fred Macaulay (two half hour sets each) and he on stage he told a very funny story involving his cat. It was told with such beautiful sarcasm and wit that the old master had the audience rolling with laughter in the aisles. He is a great pleasure to watch and always delivers top quality comedy.
