NEIL MULLARKEY

One Word Improv: Albery Theatre, London, 1997

Neil Mullarkey is a brilliant improviser who starred alongside Eddie Izzard, Suki Webster and Stephen Frost for One Word Improv that I saw at the Albery Theatre (now the Noel Coward Theatre) in London’s West End in 1997. The team are self-assured and knowledgeable at dealing with the audience ideas which fired the show: they briefly disposed of juvenile mischievous or errantly ludicrous suggestions flat in order to allow themselves longer scenes created by more abundant material. Since part of the fun of watching improv was the prospect of seeing a performer stumped, the foursome took delight in leaving one another lost and the talented group produced a very funny and inspired evening.
