BARRY FROM WATFORD (AKA ALEX LOWE)

Mervyn Stutter’s Pick of The Fringe (as Barry from Watford): Pleasance Courtyard, Edinburgh, 2013
Always Be Comedy: The Tommyfield pub, Kennington, London, 2018

Comic actor Alex Lowe’s creation Barry from Watford appeared at Mervyn Stutter’s Pick of the Fringe in 2013.  Barry is an 85-year-old London with bad false teeth and a filthy mouth.

Lowe also appeared as Barry in March 2018 at Always Be Comedy.  Staggering onto the stage fully made up with prosthetics,  Lowe transformed himself into an old man with a very funny line in smut and innuendo.

The delivery of the sexually suggestive lines that finished off every story made for an utterly inspired routine.  I had seen Barry on stage before some years ago but I cannot remember him being this memorably funny and I was weeping with laughter throughout the routine.   Indeed Lowe (who I believe to be one of the funniest character actors of his generation) shook my hand whilst I was queueing for the show, grinned at me and told me that we were in line for some fun tonight. Indeed we were and as a result he deserved a standing ovation from me and another handshake. Barry, like Lowe’s other great creation, Clinton Baptiste is a class act and is very highly recommended.
