ROBERT WHITE

Mervyn Stutter’s Pick of The Fringe: Pleasance Courtyard, Edinburgh, 2017
Always Be Comedy: The Tommyfield pub, Kennington, London, 2018

I first saw Robert White perform at a lunchtime showcase on Mervyn Stutter’s Pick of The Fringe at the Edinburgh Festival in 2017.  White stood clumsily behind his keyboard constantly twitching and fiddling with the mic stand or the knobs and dials on his board as he expertly jingles his way through his act. As he prepared for a song, he threw out some humorous puns to the audience and when he started playing, the music was an accompaniment to White’s nicely written comic tunes, delivered with an acute sense of timing.

Having come runner up in the 2018 series of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent (losing only to Lost Voice Guy).  White was the opening act at an Always Be Comedy showcase that I attended in October 2018.  Sitting in my usual seat in the front row who are always in the firing line of any act, the camp comedian spotted me sitting in the front row laughing and targeted his outrageous routine at me.   Very reluctantly for me (for once) and nervously not knowing what was going to happen next, I was invited to join him on stage for a rendition of a famous song from the musical Oliver! where his filthy lyrics and my intervention brought the house down.
