Musical comedy sisters Nicola & Rosie Dempsey otherwise known as Flo & Joan (a name they took from their grandmothers) played Always Be Comedy in September 2019. I had tried and failed to see their act at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and so was delighted to watch them perform a twenty-minute set. Nicola stood mainly impassive behind a piano and Rosie was slightly more animated, shaking a tambourine to terrifically created music melodies and extremely witty songs about amongst other subjects drinking too much. Their style was inspired with exceptionally fast and clever lyrics and very amiable crosstalk, which the audience loved.
They returned to Always Be Comedy Online in March 2021 and May 2021 (where they performed a full show including new material) with more of classic songs and routines. The highlight for me was a song named Carol the Cracker Packer which was about a worker at Carrs cracker factory in Carlisle that reminded me of home where I walk past every day to go into town.
Flo & Joan also made a wonderful return to live comedy by appearing at the London Comedy Allstars at the Wonderground in Earls Court in September 2021 and for Always Be Comedy live in November 2021. The tongue-twister lyrics were inspired which had the entire online crowd trying to sing along.
I also saw them performing their full show Sweet Release at the Leicester Comedy Festival in February 2022. They were extremely popular, full of originality, warmth and humour and they were a wonderful act to watch.
