Unbeknown to me and new to the comedy scene, George Lewis knows and works with my brother who isn’t in the comedy business.  I had never heard of Lewis until he played at a try-out set at Always Be Comedy in 2017.  I thought he was an absolute natural: very sharp, lively and quick witted and I told him so when we met after his set.  A few months later I was chatting to my brother on the phone. He had been chatting to Lewis about his comedy and had asked if he had played Always Be Comedy.  Lewis had responded with a yes describing it as a very supportive club and my brother then said have you seen a very loud, laughing bloke in the front row cavorting wildly in his seat when you were on stage.  Lewis answered: yes, he is a super-fan.  That’s my brother said Lewis’ passenger.  Lewis didn’t believe him so after Lewis played the club again; I went up to him and said, I believe you have met my brother.  Lewis grinned and said I thought James Gill (the MC) was your brother! I replied: James Gill is my comedy brother, not my real brother.

Lewis did a brilliant ten-minute routine as part of the Off The Kerb showcase at The Comedy Store in London in April 2018.  The Northerner’s story-telling skills were second-to-none displaying rebellious, natural comedy delighting the audience with his delivery of the material.  By the end of his routine, I was exhausted from laughing and he was a definite highlight of the evening.

I was delighted to see Lewis’ solo show at the Edinburgh Fringe in August 2018.  The show revolves around a younger Lewis’ attempt to resemble Liam Gallagher from the band Oasis to impress a girl at his Stockport school talent show.   Lewis was exceptionally likeable and was brilliant at constructing self-depreciating stories of youth.  He was extremely funny and won over the room.

Lewis appeared at Always Be Comedy in October 2019 delivering new material and was once again very engaging, likeable and endearing to his audience.  He was hysterically funny with stories about his family life.

For me, George Lewis is one of the real current finds on the comedy circuit. He is a brilliantly inventive comic storyteller who builds his routines to a crescendo of cascading laughter for the audience.  Lewis is very, very funny, I look forward to seeing him again soon and he deserves every success.
