Comedian Jimmy Bird runs Birdies Comedy, a free comedy showcase, for new and inspired comedians who want to try out material.  The club was originally in a small room above the Blue Posts pub in London’s Piccadilly where I first went in 2016 to support my friend and new comedian Jonathan Boulton who wanted to try a five-minute spot.  Resident MC Brendan O’Donaghue introduced Boulton who went down well with the crowd.  The club moved to a bigger room in 2017 above The Savoy Tap pub in London’s Strand where I also attended where Bird closed the first half of the show.

Birdies showcase is principally for comedians starting out, but it also is a place for professional acts to try out new material in a friendly supportive environment.  I have been many times and twice in 2018 (in January and September) and it is always great to see award-winning Bird on the stage.

In January 2020, when I went, he admitted to me before his set that he had not performed comedy for seven months.  He needn’t have worried as he was blisteringly funny with jokes on subjects ranging from growing older to fatherhood which had me and the audience in stitches.  Bird is very, very funny and consistently delivers belly laughs.

Bird’s dry, laconic act cuts straight to the jokes that is a straightforward approach and ensures a near bullet-proof set that is very funny and works a treat.  I look forward very much to going back to Birdies Comedy again soon.
