I watched comedian Phil Wang perform three times at Always Be Comedy in London in 2017.  One of the shows was to help celebrate my 50th birthday where he appeared with compere James Gill and political impressionist Matt Forde.

Every-time Wang walked onto the stage he had immense likeability and delivered stories centring around his experiences as a Malaysian-born British citizen.  He had a very easy, self-depreciating charm which warmed to the audiences straight away.  He was amazingly confident and a very, very funny man.

Returning favourite Wang played Always Be Comedy in September and October 2018 and again in January, May, June and November 2019.  In June 2019 Wang performed a preview for his new Edinburgh Fringe show and in November he performed a new work in progress set.  Subjects included his continuing attempt to be content, his view on adulthood and relationships.  When I saw him on every occasion, he delivered superb sets with his usual swagger and charm.

In May and August 2020, Wang was a guest for Always Be Comedy Online and appeared for a live show in September 2020.  Wang’s tales of frustration and coping at such a difficult time were brilliantly executed with intelligent wit and honesty into wonderful comic routines.  Wang had the great ability to draw an audience in and make them listen and engage with what he is saying.  His jokes and stories were well-constructed.

I was delighted to watch Always Be Comedy Online: An Evening with Phil Wang in February 2021 where compere James Gill chatted to the comedian about his career.  The comedian also returned to live stand-up performing new material at Always Be Comedy at The Tommyfield pub in June 2021 where once again he drew the audience in to listening to his stories and then delivered a killer punchline.

Wang participated in another full evening for Always Be Comedy Online in November 2021 where this time he chatted about his book Sidesplitter: How to Be From Two Worlds At Once.  He described his cultural background with brilliant humour and wit and really engaged with the online audience.

The comedian returned to Always Be Comedy live for two shows in January 2022 where he delivered ten minutes of brilliant new material with expert delivery and then again in June 2022 where he previewed his wonderfully funny new Edinburgh Fringe show The Real Hero In All This.

Wang was a guest for Edinburgh Comedy All Stars at the Edinburgh Fringe in August 2022.  He was hilarious talking about his experiences in lockdown producing an exceptionally funny ten-minute set.

Even with a barrage of new material and ideas, headlining the new Always Be Comedy Wandsworth venue in October and again at the Kennington venue in November 2022, the comedian was effortlessly laugh-out-loud funny reducing me to hysterics as he talked about the challenges in the world.

Wang has developed a brilliant comic persona that is exceptionally funny and wonderful to see.
