Roy Chubby Brown: The Sands Centre, Carlisle, 1998
Curiously, I went along to see Roy Chubby Brown (real name Royston Vasey which famously is the location for the radio and TV dark comedy series The League of Gentlemen) at The Sands Centre, Carlisle in 1998. As I sat in my seat and lights went down for the show to start, the sweet sound of Orinocco Flow by Enya played through the speakers. Suddenly the music stopped and a large man in a trademark clown-like costume with flying helmet and goggles was standing on stage ready to insult the packed audience. The smutty, rude jokes and slurs grew tiresome very quickly but I was amazed at the cross section and age range of the audience who all seemed to love this popular comedian who has been consistently touring for the last twenty-five years.
