Play: Maybe Dick (Hambledon Productions): Buxton Fringe Festival 2023: Rotunda Bubble, Pavilion Gardens, Buxton, 2023

Lincolnshire-based Hambledon Productions presented the play Maybe Dick, that I watched at the Buxton Fringe Festival in July 2023.  Having just appeared as Tommy Cooper’s in the company’s play, Just Like That! The Tommy Cooper Show (see Tommy Cooper blog entry) an hour earlier, the Grimsby born comic actor, John Hewer, played every single role in his self-written skewed take on the infamous story of Moby Dick.  The Monty-Python-esq / Carry On style script was laden with puns and jokes as the very talented Hewer guided the audience through the narrative with storytelling, voice characters, jokes, songs and even puppetry.  He proved to be a very engaging guide, clearly exhausted at the end of the performance as the audience cheered.

Having already made shows about Spike Milligan, Steptoe and Son and Tommy Cooper, I am looking forward to seeing more output from Hambledon Productions.
