Tony Law is a Canadian comedian residing in London. His stage act is inspired lunacy full of lengthy strange asides and throwaway lines. Law is constantly sel- analysing, reacting out loud whether a line has gone well or not. The set starts off with one word and appears to be made up of wild rants that greatly entertain the audience.
Law has been a comic for years and I have seen him perform on many occasions. He appeared in the play Killer Joe at the Edinburgh Festival in 2007 and did fantastic surreal sets on both Late ‘n’ Live in 2011, a guest at Rich Hall’s Hoedown in 2013 also at Edinburgh. I also saw him at Always Be Comedy in London in 2016 where the audience really took to his way off sense of humour. A year later, in 2017, I saw his full hour show which was dangerously scheduled at midday in the Stand Comedy Club at the Edinburgh Fringe. The show was entitled Absurdity for the Common People and the venue was packed. Law did outstay his welcome and was loved once again by the audience.
Law topped the bill at Always Be Comedy in March 2018. His inspired brand of lunacy was unleashed onto the audience with very funny consequences. Law may be an acquired taste but his force of character conquered over the proceedings and he regularly managed to get the crowd still laughing out loud about the previous joke when he’s already moved onto the next.
I watched Law again for the Clapham Comedy Club in October 2020. His wild meandering routines and banter with the audience were impressive drawing them into his surreal world. His set was very clever as it was loud, ludicrous, and hilarious.
To finish my day off at Hastings Fringe in July 2021, I watched Law perform an hour of surreal new material. I was in awe as he picked a word or subject from thin air and made it very funny.
Law is a great comic experience and one to behold.
