For telling one-liners, puns and superb wordplay, Gary Delaney is one of the best and I believe he is up there with Milton Jones, Tim Vine, Darren Walsh and Stewart Francis. Clearly having fun on stage every time, I see Delaney, the first time was at the Pleasance Late Show at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013. He ambled on to the stage, judged the drunken crowd with a few testing one-liners and then opted to go for twenty minutes of filthy gags which the audience loved. In 2015, at the Brighton Fringe, I saw him perform at Kraters Comedy Club a whole new set of brilliantly executed jokes on any subject that came to mind. In 2017, I saw him deliver a very safe set, yet still very funny for the lunchtime crowd at Mervyn Stutter’s Pick of the Fringe and Delaney’s 2017 tour There’s Something About Gary in the same year at the Festival where I saw him deliver a full hour of quality gags. Delaney’s jokes are in a long music hall tradition yet can be extremely offensive, vulgar but above all very funny. One minute the room was filled with groaning laughter at some of his puns, the next the audience were constantly amused at his brilliantly constructed material.
Delaney is a masterful comedian who delivered superbly crafted jokes to a Sunday afternoon crowd in a marquee at the Big Funny Festival at Richmond in June 2019. Some of the jokes were extremely risqué but the audience didn’t seem to mind as the set got funnier and funnier.
In November 2021, I went to the Cryer Theatre in Carshalton to catch Delaney’s new tour Gary In Punderland which was hysterical. The hour was once again crammed with very near the knuckle puns which delighted the packed audience.
Delaney is up there with the best of the of the current one-line joke tellers and I could listen to him all evening. Delaney is always very enjoyable to watch and is a great pun comedian.
