Scottish comedian Danny Bhoy was a very popular draw at the Edinburgh Festival when I saw him in 2006 and 2011. On stage he came across as a very affable, amiable comedian who delivered innocuous, amusing and relevant material.
I then watched him twice perform in London at the Greenwich Comedy Festival in 2015 and at Always Be Comedy in 2017. Again, He was warm and relatively inoffensive with his outlook on life and I could see that there is a finely tuned comedy brain working away beneath the cool surface. The show at Always Be Comedy was very funny and left me feeling good.
Bhoy’s biggest fan, it would seem, is an 82-year-old lady called Ann. She sat next to me and as the Scottish comedy star (who I have seen frequently play to sell-out crowds at his native Edinburgh Festival Fringe) appeared on stage at Always Be Comedy in October 2019, he acknowledged the fact. Ann had previously stolen the show by standing on stage and revealing her age and everyone in the audience who were amazed. T the end of Bhoy’s set, she gave him a little bag of goodies and received a hug.
Bhoy was his usual confident and unflinching self, delighted that Ann was sitting in the front row. His headline set consisted of newly written new jokes, stories and material for a forthcoming Canadian tour and judging by the adulation the audience gave him, the funny man is sure to have continued success.
